Sequels
It is generally accepted that Jane Austen started the Regency romance. That's why so many of her books and characters have been taken up for sequels by more modern authors. My question is why nobody has taken up characters from other authors, such as Georgette Heyer? (I can understand why nobody would use Barbara Cartland's as her characters were not well developed.) Baronness Orczy and Jeffery Farnol are two others who had created some wonderful and memorable characters.
Do others like reading sequels, or do you prefer making up your own after you've finished reading something you like? |

There are many available, but I would guess people shy away from using too much from famous authors because of copyright issues. I do disagree with you on one point, however, although Barbara Cartland's later characters were indeed not well developed, her earliest were fantastic. Unfortunately, she then got into trying to write books too quickly, and got into all the girls being "spiritual" and they were no longer so well developed. |

RE: Sequels
That's interesting to know about Cartland. I've only read ones where the girls were "spiritual". I didn't mind them because Farnol's were "spiritual" as well, but they were much better developed. Also, I prefer my regencies to be innocent rather than steamy. However, can you tell me which ones of Cartland's were her earlier novels?
