Hello from Thisbe and help?
I'm a long time reader of Regencies, though I haven't looked at them much lately. I'm also a (two story) published fantasy author who is currently working on a pseudo-Regency story set in a world with different social and gender rules.

I actually signed up here because I have been combing websites lately looking for an author I can't remember the name of. I read her books in the 70's when I was a teenager trading books at the local Paperback Shack. They were sold as Regencies but were very odd, sort of weirdly dark and gothic, though nothing supernatural ever happened in them. The one I remember best had pretty much the same plot as Heyer's Sylvester, but instead of being played for laughs was horribly serious--the poor guy the girl picked to be the villain of her book was actually an impoverished emigre and her book was ruining his life! Though it did work out happily in the end.

There was another one about a guy who was maybe a smuggler, though I think it turned out to be something political, and another one which had creepy dolls in it and I think was about a governess.

Of course I can't remember the names of any of them, though I think the one I remember best had a girl's name title, like Valentine, or something, not helpful. Thanks, Thisbe

RE: Hello from Thisbe and help?
I know you posted this a while back, but since I just recently discovered this site I figured I'd try my luck with some suggestions for you - if you are still searching for this author. Forgive me if I suggest the obvious, but could it be Victoria Holt? She never did anything overtly odd though. I've read a couple interesting gothic / dark authors that wrote in the late 70's as well that may have fit the bill - like Beverly C. Warren or Anne Knoll. They frequently had novels with titles with long place and/or female names. I hope this helps, somewhat Confused

Thanks for answering. I know it can't be Victoria Holt, whose books i remember quite well, but I will try your other suggestions.
