Recommendations for a newcomer?
Hello everyone,

I'm a longtime reader of historical fiction (Gothic romance, swashbucklers, Edwardian novels, period mysteries etc.) but new to the Regency genre. I don't know what took me so long to get here!

I find the period fascinating, and I love stories "of manners", especially light romance with a touch of comedy or intrigue thrown in.

I'm humbly asking readers on this forum to recommend some favorites to me. What should I start with? I would like to order a few Georgette Heyer books, but which ones? Decisions, decisions . . .

Thanks for any replies forthcoming!

RE: Recommendations for a newcomer?
I have a huge collection of Heyer's books, romances and mysteries. I have not read all of them because I'm afraid to run out. All her romances are historical, mostly Regency, but some are Georgian and earlier. Some of my favorites from the ones I've read include The Talisman Ring, The Nonesuch, The Black Moth and The Masqueraders.

Cousin Kate has a touch of the gothic. Some of her mysteries are also reminiscent of more modern gothics (contemporary to her time).

The Nonesuch, Faro's Daughter, The Corinthian and Regency Buck are all Heyer novels with a Regency setting. And everyone of them is quite delicious, IMHO. But then, there is also Venetia, Arabella, Bath Tangle and The Convenient Marriage.

You can find a list of all of Heyer's Romances at Georgette Heyer.com Romance Novels List. There you can read a brief excerpt from each, which might help you decide which of them you want to read.

Many of her novels have been reprinted over the past couple of years, and you can always get used copies online at the various book sites, like Biblio and Alibris.

I envy you the pleasure of a first-time reader of Heyer. What a treat you have in store! Smile

Regards,

Kat
