For me, I love the period. Descriptions of the manners, rules of society, dress, etc., take me back to a long, forgotten era.

RE: What do you like most about Regency romances?
I love it because it is a very narrow period of time between the rougher eighteenth century and the explosion of the Industrial Revolution. It was the first point in history when people began to bathe regularly, launder their clothing and in other ways maintain personal hygiene similar to ours. Their clothing was not only cleaner than that of earlier ages (for example, urine was the dry cleaning fluid of choice during the Elizabethan era - YUCK!) but they also had more comfortable garments, as cotton was becoming widely available. And silk was also being woven into finer cloth.
But they didn't yet have phones or trains or computers, so life was slower, more relaxed, and certainly more elegant than our own. I also lust after their stuff, like fine porcelain, cut glass, beautifully carved furniture, thick carpets and other luscious appointments. And they had servants to wait on them. How lovely to have someone bring you chocolate in bed! Oh sigh! Kathryn Kane The Regency Redingote http://quikonnex.com/channel/page/tinuviel |
