Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice
The first book I read from Jane Austen, and undoubtedly, in my opinion, her best work. If I could get anyone else interested, I would love to discuss this book. I know many people have studied it in school and lots have been written about it from a literary perspective. But I'd like to just have an ordinary talk about what you like or didn't like, etc.

RE: Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice
I thought this book was timeless. Austen's books seemed quite popular during her lifetime, but I think Pride and Prejudice is the only one that still remains popular today. I don't know. It's really the only one I liked. Elizabeth was wonderful - beautiful, intelligent, sensible, humorous.

RE: Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice
Yes, I liked Elizabeth the best as well. There was another one I liked, but I can't remember the name of the novel - it was one of the later ones and I believe someone else finished it, so it's hard to say whether she was the heroine of Ms. Austen's imaginings. But, of course, one of the reasons I also loved Pride and Prejudice is the hero, Mr. Darcy. He was the dark and rather mysterious character because he was socially withdrawn. None of her other heros stood out like that. Mr. Knightley gave me the impression of an older and wiser man, Edward Ferrars was a perfect gentleman but oh so dull.
Overall, the characters in Pride and Prejudice were the best. It was as if she finally managed to create the ultimate combination in this novel and could not recreate it. You had the silly Mrs. Bennett and Mr. Collins, to the naively indiscreet Lydia to the wicked Wickham to the haughty Lady De Bourgh. |
